INSTRUCTIONS
For 2 to 6 players
Ages 8 and up
Object:
Be the first player to get to FIN(ish) by guessing
correctly what the different "Web Speaks" mean AND by having other
players vote for the "Web Speaks" you create!
Contents:
Yahoo! Web Speak game board, deck of cards with
Web Speaks on one side and the answers to them on the other side, answer
sheets, plastic card/answer sheet folder, voting dice, movers, instructions.
Set
Up:
Each player chooses a mover and places it at ST(art). Each
player takes a
voting die.
Mix the Yahoo! Web Speak cards and place them face
up so that you see the Yahoo! Web Speak name. The other sides of the cards have
the answers to the three Web Speaks that are showing.
Choose a player to start as host. For the next
round, the player to his/her left will be the host. Game play moves that way
until one player lands on FIN(ish) and correctly guesses one more Web Speak.
Each player gets an answer sheet (write your
initials somewhere at the top); all players need a pencil or pen.
Playing:
The first host takes the top card—don't let the
other players see the back of it!—and decides which of the three Web Speaks
s/he will use.
If using an acronym (the Web Speaks that use
letters), the host can read out what the letters are. Other players can write
them down on their sheets.
If using an emoticon (the Web Speaks that use
symbols to make up a picture), the host can show the emoticon to all the other
players to look at.
All the players, except the host for the round,
now write down on one line of their answer sheet what they think the Web Speak
means.
When players are done, they secretly pass their
answer to the host. The host puts the
answer sheets, along with the Web Speak card, into the
slots inside the folder. Start from the number one slot and place the answer
sheets/Web Speak card—in any order—until you fill up the last spot you need.
With 5 players, you will have all 6 slots filled: one for each of the answers
and one for the Web Speak card.
Out loud, tell the players the number one slot
answer (whether it is the card or an answer sheet answer). Continue—telling the
other players what answer is in the number 2 slot, number 3 slot and so
on—until all are read.
Nobody should be able to tell which is the Web
Speak card and which are answers from answer sheets!
Players now secretly vote for the answer they
think is the correct one* by secretly placing the number they think is correct
face up on their voting die.
*(Note: It is possible to find alternate answers
on the internet for some Web Speak cards. The Yahoo! Web Speak Game uses the
most popular answers and, for the purpose of the game, should be used as the
"correct" answers.)
After all players have their voting die face up to
the number that they want to vote on, they reveal their answers all at the same
time. If there are six players, any player who wants to vote for the Web Speak
in the seventh slot, simply picks up their game die when it's time to reveal
the vote.
The host says out loud what the correct answer is. Players
who guess correctly move ahead 3 spaces on the board.
Any player who receives votes for the Web Speak
they make up (that isn’t the same as the correct Web Speak) moves ahead 2
spaces for each vote they get.
Place the card on the bottom of the deck. For the
second round, the player to the left of the first host now takes on that role.
S/he returns the answer sheets to the other players (the previous host will now
use his/hers for the first time). The other players should cross out their
first answer to avoid confusion!
The new host now chooses one of the three Web
Speaks on the next card and the game continues.
RA
Anytime a player lands on one of the two R(oll)
A(gain) spaces by exact count, they roll their voting die and move ahead that
many spaces!
Ending & Winning the Game:
The first player to land on FIN needs to get one
more Web Speak correct OR get another player to vote for his/her Web Speak. The
host chooses a Web Speak and the game continues with all players. If the player
at FIN ends up being the host for that round, s/he will have to wait until the
next round to try to win.
In case of a tie, all tying players roll their
voting die. The player with the highest roll wins!
