Yellow Brick Road Game
For 2 to 4 players
Ages 3 to 6

Instructions

Object:
Be the first player to collect the Ruby Slippers, a Diploma, a Medallion of Courage and a Heart and get to the finish circle (where Glinda the Good Witch is about to grant Dorothy her wish!).

Contents:
Gameboard, card deck, spinner, movers, mover stands, pieces showing the Ruby Slippers, a Diploma, a Medallion of Courage and a Heart.

Set Up:
Shuffle the card deck and place the deck so that the picture of Dorothy and her friends are face up.

Carefully remove the four movers-Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion-from the sheet and place each one in a mover stand. Decide which mover each player wants to be and place those movers at the start circle. That's the yellow circle showing the tornado!

Carefully separate the 3-sided pieces and place them in matching piles of Ruby Slippers, Diploma, Medallion of Courage and Heart. Place them off to the side of the board.

Playing:
The youngest player begins the game by taking the top card from the deck.

  • If the card shows 1, 2, 3 or 4 bricks, move that many spaces along the gameboard.
  • If the card shows Glinda the Good Witch, you get to spin the spinner and take a matching piece that the spinner lands on.
SPECIAL NOTE: THROUGHOUT THE CAME, YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE OF EACH PIECE. IF YOU SPIN A PIECE YOU ALREADY HAVE, YOUR TURN SIMPLY ENDS AND THE NEXT PLAYER GOES.

Special Squares on the Board:

  • Arrow spaces: If you land on an arrow space by exact count, move your mover ahead or back through that path.
The four places this happens on the board are:

Purple arrow taking you through the Glinda's stars path and AHEAD on the gameboard

Purple arrow taking you down the broomstick and BACK on the gameboard.

Purple arrow taking you through Glinda's bubbles and AHEAD on the gameboard.

Ruby Slippers/arrow space: described later in the instructions.

Once you go ahead or back on these paths, stop on the space the second arrow points to until your next turn.

  • Glinda spaces:  If you land on one of these spaces by exact count (or again, get her on a card), spin the spinner and collect the piece that the arrow lands on if you don't already have it.
  • Wicked Witch of the West spaces:   if you land on one of these spaces by exact count, you miss your next turn.
Ending the Game:
Near the top right of the gameboard you will see a special Ruby Slippers space. When you reach that space STOP.  Do not pass it even if you have not taken all your steps.

If, by this time, you have the 4 pieces, on your next turn take a card and move past this space toward the finish circle

If, by this time, you DO NOT have the 4 pieces, move your mover through the Flying Monkeys' path and leave your mover on the space the arrow points to. On your next turn, take a card and continue the game moving around the path to the right. Again, STOP when you reach the Ruby Slippers space and, on your next turn, either continue toward finish or go through the Flying Monkeys' path again and so on until you do have all 4 pieces.

Winning the Game:
The first player to reach the finish circle-and you do not need to do it by exact count-wins the game.
